It’s easy nowadays to
take a lot of rudimentary design basics for granted, given the number
of style templates out there that are easily accessible. Your web
designer from Croydon has a distinct flair, as does one from
Cambridge. Still, there are some rules in web design that cannot be
broken.
Find your type
Sans serif fonts (text
with plain corners) are for headlines because they are readable in
very large sizes. In contrast, serif fonts (text with irregular
edges) are effective for the content because the edges lead the eye
for easy reading.
Everything in
moderation
Each line of text
should contain only 50 to 60 characters. More than that could tire
the reader. Type size should be at least 16 pixels or 12 points. When
it comes to which font to use, try selecting a solid one that is easy
to read and a whimsical one for impact.
Colour your world
Select a three-colour
palette and stay with it. Notice how the Manchester United website is
decked with red, black, and gold? The colour combination establishes
your identity.
Look at the big
picture
Photos would definitely
make a site more interesting, but make sure there is balance between
the size of the picture and the amount of text. Since images are
pixel-based, enlarging a small photo will create a pixelated mess.
When you’ve got the
“look” down, be consistent and don’t go making changes halfway
thru. It will send a message that you are unsure of yourself.
